Thing 2 part 2

I must have skipped over this when I worked on the first part of this, so I'm getting back to it now.

Although I don't see our library using all the technologies found here, we already use several of them. I use several for my own use (Delicious,Blogging, Library Thing are a few). We use some of them interdepartmentally (Blogging, Flickr, Wikis, Instant Messaging). I have attended conferences that use Blogs, Wikis, Delicious). One of the other librarians used Twitter at a recent conference and is now a devoted Tweeter. I often suggest that patrons use GoogleDocs because our public computers do not have MS Word and they often want to create documents while they are here to email to themselves. I have wanted to set up Instant Message virtual reference here in the library for some time, but still have not been able to sell it to the webguy. The instruction librarian is working on creating podcasts on various subjects that he teaches.

One Last Thing

I really enjoyed participating in this fun activity and learned a lot. A big thank you to the organizers and contributors.

Thing 23 - Reflection

I was already familar with many of the 23 things, but others were brand new. There were things I really liked (Image Generators), things I wasn't real fond of (Ning or Digg), things I need to learn more about (Twitter), things I revisited that turned out to have some nice new surprises (Library Thing), and some old friends (Blogging, Google Docs).

I have almost finished putting all my books on Library Thing. I just need to add my permanent collection (which might take me on into next year). I like that I can now make different folders because I really like everything compartmentalized.

Thing 22 - Developing your own 23 things

Three librarians from my school attended the conference this year where we were introduced to the 23 things. I don't know if the others signed up to do the challenge or not. I can see where starting our own 23 things would be a fun thing to do among the librarians. We used to have what we called "search school". We took turns giving a presentation on databases or other search mechanisms to the other librarians. This would be a good way for all of us to learn new technologies. We all have varying degrees of techno competence and with different things so it would be a fun sharing session.

Thing 21 - Podcasts

I attended a class last year on producing podcasts and I enjoy listening to NPR podcasts from time to time.

I found a couple of interesting library podcasts. One was "This Week @ Your Library" and it discussed a new exhibit. Another was a group of podcasts called the "Library Survival Guide" from Emory University. I listenedd to a couple of those. One was on Endnote and citation managers and the other was on Google Scholar.

Thing 20 - You Tube

I watched several interesting videos by libraries.
One was UNT Librarie's Portal to Texas History http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlDx9n4wFb0 I selected this one because UNT is our sister campus and I help with our archive collection.

The Book Cart Drill Team Austin 2008 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fh27C1dkNgg I'm not quite sure where this was performed, but was different.

Tex-Share Databases #1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eicVA_3FrtA I picked this one because I am on the Library of Texas committee.

Thing 19 - Google Docs

Ah, one of my favorite of the 23 things. Love this application because it allows me to create documents from work or home and view them in either place. I have been a big fan of this one ever since the first time I saw it. :)
